Island Time crew goes to New Zealand - South Island
Part 15

New Zealand Day 15

We left Haast and headed east back across the island toward Dunedin thru the Haast pass in the Southern Alps.   We were in the mountains as soon as we left Haast.  Once through the mountains we were again in an area with hills and a lot of farming.

Fortunately the day was sunny for our trip thru the pass in the alps.  As it was still spring snow showers could be encountered in the passes.

A deer farm – there were many deer farms scattered in the country side.  Once the deer herds were wild (imported for sport and food) but they were either rounded up or killed and now they are farmed.  I not sure how many deer are in the wild but being non native with no natural predator they got out of hand.  In the past, to capture the deer the wranglers would ride on the skids of a helicopter which would fly low over the deer (who were running of course) and then the wrangler would leap onto the back of the deer to catch it
