New Zealand Day 3 We picked up our camper today; a two process so we did not get on the road until noon and headed north toward the Bay of Islands (120 miles north of Auckland). Almost immediately after leaving the suburbs of Auckland, we were into the famous green mountains of New Zealand. That first night we stayed in Whangarei (E 174 degrees 19.2.minues S 35 degrees 43.5 minutes). In Maori the Wh in Whangarei is pronounced like a P. A little more history, the first European to discover New Zealand was the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642 when he had a skirmish with the Maori and moved on. If he had claimed the land for the Dutch they might be speaking Dutch now. James Cook mapped and claimed the land for the British in 1768.
